About Our School

Twentieth Street Elementary School is on the east side of South Los Angeles, near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Central Avenue. The school is part of a working-class neighborhood with a population of 95% Hispanic, 4% African American, and 1% other. According to the California Census, the median household income was $30,000. As of 2016, about 60% of the residents are below the poverty level.

Since 2015, there’s been a +25 point growth in ELA and +22 point in Math in SBAC. 20th St Elementary went from the bottom 25% to the top 25% in just four years in SBAC Math in the state of CA.

In May 2019, the Innovative Public Schools, in partnership with USC Sol Price School of Public Policy and USC Rosier School of Education, recognized 20th Street as a Top Los Angeles Public School. Innovative Schools reported that of the 2,068 public schools in Los Angeles County, 20th Street Elementary was one of 257 schools that made the list of Top Public Schools that are closing the achievement gap for low-income African American and Latino students in Los Angeles County. While we are pleased that we are approaching the achievement gap, we still have a long way to go to achieve the academic excellence needed to prepare our children for college so they may have higher earnings, higher material standards of living, and an enhanced quality of life.

In 2018, we established a Spanish Dual Language Program to foster bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages. Our goal is to allow underserved students to develop a deep academic proficiency in two languages, giving them the tools to become highly sought-after bilingual professionals in today’s more globalized world.

Our philosophy is simple; Family, school, and community partnerships collaborate in activities that place students at the center. We strive for effective partnerships based on mutual trust and respect and shared responsibility for the education of all students.

Our school believes in giving all stakeholders a voice through our School Site Council, School Leadership Council, and English Learner Advisory Committee. Additionally, our school has established a Family Engagement Action Team responsible for planning and enacting school goals and activities.

Our vision is very CLEAR:

Community: We are a resilient community of learners who celebrate our learning

Leadership: We are leaders who design the future.

Empathy: We strive to understand the views of others and trust that others will do the same.

Academic Integrity: We complete our work honestly and responsibly.

Reflection: We think about our actions to ensure we are improving.
